How to Search Cases by Name
Superior Court searching goes through the official Washington Courts Odyssey Portal. Set the location to Walla Walla. In Smart Search, type the party name as Last, First Middle. Letter case does not matter. An asterisk stands in for a missing piece of a name. Hyphenated names often work better without the dash. Expect no more than 200 results. Narrow the field with a case type or a date range before you dig through the list. A broad hit is a lead only. Line up the court, case number, filed date, case type, and party role before calling it the right match.
For District and municipal matters, use Washington Courts Case Search. The official court directory sends Burbank, College Place, Prescott, Waitsburg, and Walla Walla municipal cases through Walla Walla County District Court. That shared route helps with city-named matters. A ticket or misdemeanor may carry a city name but no city portal of its own.
- Choose Superior Court or District/Municipal before entering a name.
- Select Walla Walla County or the Walla Walla court location.
- Enter the last name and first name, then try a middle initial or careful spelling variant.
- Narrow by case type, filed year, status, or judicial officer when those filters appear.
- Open the case and verify its number, location, role, dates, and events.
| Field | Type | Required | Use |
|---|---|---|---|
| Party or business name | Text | Yes in name mode | Use the portal's stated name order |
| Court or location | List | Search dependent | Limit results to Walla Walla |
| Case type and status | Filters | No | Narrow a common-name result |
| Filed year or range | Date filter | No | Separate older and current cases |
Walla Walla Case Court Levels
Odyssey serves participating Superior Courts, Walla Walla County Superior Court among them. Courts of Limited Jurisdiction are outside its reach. The state District/Municipal search sorts matters into Civil, Criminal Felony, Criminal Non-Traffic, Criminal Traffic, traffic and nontraffic infractions, Probable Cause, and Small Claim categories. One caution applies. A limited-court entry marked Criminal Felony deserves a second look. It may show an early charging or probable-cause event, not the court that finally handled the felony.
Felony, domestic, probate, juvenile, dependency, and larger civil matters belong at Walla Walla County Superior Court. An infraction, misdemeanor, parking matter, small claim, or city-origin case? Start with the District/Municipal search. Federal cases sit apart, and PACER handles the Eastern District of Washington.
How to Search by Case Number
The case number is the strongest key for a docket search. It points at one court record. Type it exactly as printed on the notice, order, or pleading. Odyssey allows an asterisk when part of the number is unknown. Washington's public systems use court-generated numbers. No single Walla Walla format fits every case level. Read case or cause number as the field label, not as a pattern to guess.
No result? Strip out stray spaces and punctuation. Confirm the court level. Consider whether the number belongs to a citation, an appellate case, or a federal case instead. The state search calls its data reference material, refreshed within about 24 hours. A very fresh filing may still need a call to the court of record.
Walla Walla Odyssey Case Limits
Odyssey Smart Search delivers case information, not a universal document library. Anonymous users can generally browse public case data. Restricted cases stay closed to anonymous visitors. Filed images are not broadly supplied. The portal also demands JavaScript, cookies, and a robot check. A failure does not mean the case is absent.
Cross-check with Washington Courts Case Search. Then call the Walla Walla County Clerk at 509-524-2780 for Superior Court matters, or District Court at 509-524-2760. Staff can tell you whether the snag is maintenance, a restricted record, an archived file, the wrong court level, or a filing that has not yet reached the public index.
What a Case Search Shows
The official Odyssey guide describes each results row as an index. Opening a Walla Walla County case can add parties, events, hearings, and dispositions. Even then, the register is a chronology. It is not a copy of every filing. Note the case number and court location first. Then contact the clerk for any pleading, order, exhibit, or certified record.
| Case Number | The court's identifier used to retrieve the same record again. |
|---|---|
| File Date and Type | When the case began and the broad category assigned by the court. |
| Location and Party | The owning court and the person's or organization's recorded role. |
| Events | Chronological entries, sometimes called the Register of Actions. |
| Hearings | Past or upcoming settings that must be checked for later changes. |
| Disposition Events | Outcome entries that may be partial, amended, or followed by more activity. |
An outcome label is not always the signed judgment. The full Walla Walla County court record may rest with the Clerk even when the portal shows only the event title.
Walla Walla Case Hearing Filters
Odyssey's Search Hearings tile accepts Walla Walla County, a date range, and Civil, Criminal, Family, or Probate or Mental Health categories. You can query by case number, party, business, attorney, Bar number, judicial officer, or courtroom. A sounds-like option helps with name variations. The official guide warns against pairing it with a wildcard.
Current Superior Court calendar families also appear on the Walla Walla County Clerk page: criminal, domestic, law-and-motion, interpreter/DV, and judge docket-day materials. Calendars show settings. They do not replace the case register. A posted hearing date can still be continued, vacated, or revised.
County vs Statewide Case Search
Walla Walla County offers no single portal that merges every trial-court level. The statewide search works as the broad entry point, Odyssey supplies the deeper Superior Court index, and the two local court offices hold the official court records. Pick your jurisdiction first. Then compare hits.
| Washington Courts Case Search | Odyssey Portal |
|---|---|
| District/Municipal, Superior, and Appellate search modes | Participating Superior Court case information |
| Useful for selecting a court level and broad category | Useful for Smart Search, hearings, events, and dispositions |
| Reference data, normally updated within about 24 hours | Anonymous access does not generally include documents |
| District/Municipal path covers Walla Walla city-routed matters | Walla Walla location filter narrows Superior results |
Need a case that might sit at the state level? The Washington Courts records finder lays out how searches work by court level, so you can see which level handles which files. For a firm answer on any Walla Walla County case, though, the court or clerk keeping the official file has the last word.
Walla Walla Archived Case Search
Cases too old for the modern portal have a second route. The Washington State Digital Archives lists a Walla Walla County Superior Court case-file collection. It covers 1926 through 2026. You can search it by case number or keywords. You can narrow things with a separate case-number field, a case year, or a year range. Civil, criminal, divorce, and probate files may all turn up there. That makes the archive handy for genealogy and local-history digging.
Access rules still apply. Adoption, dependency, and mental-competency material stays off ordinary online display. A file with no scan may simply not be digitized yet. Note what the collection gives you. Then ask the County Clerk about anything archived, incomplete, or restricted.
Restricted Cases and Access Rules
Washington General Rule 31 presumes court records are open. Statutes, court rules, and court orders carve out exceptions. General Rule 15 governs sealing and redaction. General Rule 22 protects privacy in family, protection-order, guardianship, and therapeutic-court records, and RCW 13.50.050 frames juvenile access.
A Walla Walla County case lookup that comes back empty has many possible causes: a misspelled name, the wrong court, thin date coverage, an archived record, a fresh filing, or restricted access. Sealing is only one of them. A seal closes ordinary access, while redaction keeps a public version with protected details stripped out. Before assuming the worst, ask the court whether a public or redacted copy exists. Ask also what request procedure applies. Share private identifiers only through the official court channel that asks for them.
When Walla Walla Case Search Ends
An online docket search ends once it tells you three things: the court, the case number, and the hearing or event you care about. Then the request moves offline. Superior Court documents go through the Walla Walla County Clerk by email, at the counter, by mail, or through the applicable archives route. District and municipal files follow that court's own process. Options include the District Court records form, counter, mail, fax, email, or a verbal request.
Give enough detail to separate your case from a mere name match. Ask whether the file is active or archived. Ask whether you can inspect it, and whether you need a plain or certified copy. The Walla Walla County court record search spells out every request method. It lists the current charges too. One caution: a search result alone is not certified proof. It may lag behind the clerk's own data.
